Gensokyo Map: Translated by CaptainOnimaru Gensokyo Map: Translated by CaptainOnimaru
TRADITIONAL STYLE PRINTS: [link]

This is a conceptually accurate research based map of Gensokyo, setting of the Touhou Project series. I completed it after extensive research through CANON resources and print works from the series, since there was never an officially published map.

Clues and hints to relative locations and the geography of Gensokyo have been given throughout the Touhou print works. I've read all of them carefully so I was able to compile my knowledge well enough to extrapolate a general image of Gensokyo.

On top of that, knowing that the Youkai mountain sits in the same spot as the Yatsugatake mountains in the real world gives an accurate layout of the local geography.

Note: (I made this a long time ago when it wasn't clear how exactly the PC-98 games tied into the Windows games. As it turns out, ZUN has apparently stated that they are not very canon in relation to the Windows games, and that's easy to prove upon further examination. As such, if I were to make one change to this map, I would remove the dubious mark of Yuuka's mansion which most likely does not exist in Windows Gensokyo.)

Also there's Ibaraki Kasen's residence, although probably the most vaguely located of all the landmarks so who knows where that goes.

I hadn't ever thought about it, but it's true there's been no official map. Totally needed one, seeing as I've always wondered where everything was in Gensoukyou. It seems to be missing the Netherworld itself (the location of which isn't really trace-able; it may not even be near the Sanzu necessarily), the Underworld (although also location unknown; Former Capital of Hell/Ancient City, Palace of the Earth Spirits, Nuclear Furnace), as well as Makai/Hokkai (although location unknown; possibly underground as well) and Myouren Temple and the Canal of Willows near the human village in Touhou 14 (as expected since this map is older).

I like the traditional sumi-e style you've got going here. It'd be nice if the map was a bit bigger so that I could admire it more. I also have to admire the amount of research it much have taken to determine the locations.

Aw man, the Hakurei Shrine is rather far away from the Human Village, and nearly in between is the Bamboo Forest of the Lost. Even if humans could go around, it's no wonder Reimu doesn't get any human visitors aside from the likes of Marisa...

Quick question(s): Where's the opening to the Underground/Old Hell located and where is the border leading to Hakugyokurou?

The entrance to the forgotten hell is located in the hot spring near the Hakurei shrine. Hakugyokurou is located in the Netherworld. The gates to the netherworld were found high above the clouds in PCB.

I made this map before UFO came out, so it wasn't on this one, but it's right next to the human village.

It's not technically a part of gensokyo so it would have a map of its own. The geyser itself is somewhere near the Hakkurei shrine but too small to place on this map.

Finally, a map of Gensokyo! I've been having a hard time visualizing where places are, but now I have an idea thanks to your map. Fantastic job!

If you don't mind, I'm going to post this somewhere on my friends' forums to help them visualize Gensokyo too. All credit will be given to you of course.

Oh nice works. I'm very interested :D
So I also searched maps.
In fact, Suwa(諏訪) history is very very mystery-shrouded.
yes Yatsugatake(八ヶ岳) is a model of Youkai mountain, and where tengu(Shameimaru etc) live. Mt. Tengu is included in Yatsugatake.
but some landmarks dont locate real place.
Moriya(守矢) shrine's model is Akimiya Shimosha, its one of 4 Suwa shrines located near Lake Suwa. I think Mist Lake's model is Lake Suwa.
Real Mt. Moriya(守屋山) is South of Suwa.
Based on your map, I make a hypothesis that gensoukyou maps upper is the South Maybe.

under is Suwa map

Lake Suwa is much too big to be the misty lake. It was stated in PMiSS that the misty lake was located at the base of the Youkai mountain, and fairly close to the forest of magic where the fairies live.

The Moriya Shrine was also at a smaller lake at the top of the Youkai mountain. ZUN got inspiration from the Lake Suwa Grand Shrine, but I don't think that particular lake was ever seen in Gensokyo it's probably too big and far away.

Another theory would be that the Suwa Grand Shrine was where the Moriya shrine was located in the outside world before it moved to Gensokyo and took its place on the top of the mountain.
